What to do about a bad Google review

One-star reviews feel like an emergency. Most are not, and the instinct to fight them is what turns a small problem into a public one.

First decide: is it removable?

Google removes reviews that break its policies — spam, hate speech, conflicts of interest, reviews about a different business, or ones from people who were never customers of yours. It does not remove reviews for being unfair, mistaken, or harsh.

Report the ones that qualify through your Business Profile and expect it to take days. Do not report the rest; a rejected report changes nothing and costs you the week you spent on it.

Reply so the next reader sides with you

Calm, specific, short. The audience is not the reviewer — it is the person reading reviews before booking. A measured reply below an angry review is often more persuasive than the five-star ones above it.

Dilution is the real fix

A one-star review against nine others drops your average by half a star. Against ninety, it barely moves it, and it scrolls off the first page within a week.

The businesses that shrug off bad reviews are the ones collecting a few every week. That is a volume problem, and a counter sign is the cheapest way to solve it.

Questions, answered

Should I ask the customer to take it down?
Only after you have genuinely fixed their problem, and never as a condition of fixing it. Offering anything in exchange for removal breaks the policy.
Can I sue over a false review?
Occasionally people do, and it almost always attracts more attention to the review than the review had on its own.
