Training staff to collect reviews without nagging
6 September 2026 · 4 min read
A sign works about as well as the team standing next to it. Ten minutes of training is usually the difference between two reviews a month and two a day.
Give them one sentence, not a policy
Write the exact line on a card by the till. One sentence everyone uses, tied to a moment everyone already has — handing back a card, returning keys, clearing a table. People remember one sentence; they do not remember a process.
Make the first one easy
Have each staff member watch one customer tap the sign. Once they have seen how fast it is, the ask stops feeling like an imposition — which is the real reason staff skip it.
Track the team, never the individual
Put the weekly review count on the staff noticeboard. Team totals create a habit; per-person targets create pressure on customers, and that is where policy breaches and fake reviews start.
Questions, answered
- What about shy staff?
- Give them a non-verbal version: place the sign in front of the customer while the card machine processes. The sign does the asking.
- How often should we revisit it?
- Mention the weekly number in the team huddle. Thirty seconds a week keeps the habit alive far better than a training day.
