Collecting Google reviews without a monthly subscription
5 September 2026 · 4 min read
Review software typically costs £30–£200 a month. For most local businesses, the part that collects reviews is a sign on the counter, and the rest is a dashboard for numbers Google already shows you.
What subscriptions actually sell
Three things: a way to send review requests by SMS or email, a dashboard of your ratings over time, and alerts when a review arrives. The first has real value if you have customer phone numbers and permission to use them. The second duplicates your Business Profile. The third is a free email alert from Google.
Where SMS campaigns run into trouble
Texting customers needs consent and a clean opt-out, and response rates fall fast when the message arrives hours after the visit. A tap at the counter costs nothing per send and reaches people while they still remember you.
A reasonable stack for a small shop
A sign at each till, one sentence from staff, Google's own free email alerts for new reviews, and a note in the weekly huddle. That is the whole system, and after the signs are bought it costs nothing to run.
Questions, answered
- When is paid software worth it?
- When you have many locations to compare, or a genuine SMS list with consent. For one shop, it rarely pays for itself.
- Do I need a dashboard to track reviews?
- Your Business Profile shows the count and average, and emails you each new review. That is the dashboard.
