What Google reviews actually do to local sales
29 August 2026 · 4 min read
Reviews are not a vanity number. They act at three separate points in a customer's decision, and only one of them is about ranking.
Before you are even seen
Review count and score feed the prominence part of Google's local ranking. Two similar shops the same distance from a searcher will not appear equally if one has twelve reviews and the other has two hundred.
In the three seconds of comparison
A local pack shows three businesses with a star rating and a count. That is the whole comparison for most searchers: they tap the one that looks safest, then check whether the newest reviews are recent.
This is where a mediocre average with recent, specific reviews often beats a perfect score from 2023.
After they arrive
Reviews set expectations. A run of reviews praising fast service creates customers who expect fast service — which is a warning as much as a benefit. Read what yours actually promise on your behalf.
Questions, answered
- Is there a rating below which people stop calling?
- Behaviour drops off sharply below about four stars, because that is where a business stops looking like a safe default.
- Do reviews matter for a business with no competition?
- Less for choice, still plenty for trust — and for whether a stranger phones at all.
